Why might I need a podiatrist?

A podiatrist treats medical issues related to the foot and ankle. These conditions include:

  • Sports injuries
  • Sprains, strains, broken bones
  • Arthritis of the foot or ankle
  • Heel pain (bone spurs/plantar fasciitis)
  • Persistent fungal infections (athlete’s foot)
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Calluses, warts
  • Bunions (an out-of-place big toe bone or joint)

The podiatry department at Harbor is equipped to diagnose and treat any of these ailments with medication, physical therapy, or as in rare cases, surgery. They can also suggest changes you can make to prevent further discomfort. You don’t have to live with pain!

What does diabetes have to do with podiatry?

Patients with diabetes often have high blood sugar, which can damage nerves and blood vessels. Nerve damage can lead to numbness, tingling, pain, or such loss of feeling in your feet that you may not notice an infection or injury that needs treatment. Nerve damage can also affect your body’s ability to regulate moisture in your feet, causing extremely dry skin.

Podiatrists are specially trained to spot early signs of these and other problems. They can design a program of treatment and prevention that’s right for you. For this reason, a yearly visit to a podiatrist should be part of any diabetes healthcare plan.
